VAG’s Statement of Fundamental Truth

The following statement contains the summary of 16 fundamental truths of the Assemblies of God of Vietnam

1. The Inspiration of the Scriptures

The Bible is the inspired Word of God. It is the revelation of God to mankind – the infallible rule of faith and practice for all believers.

2 Timothy 3:15-17; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Peter 1:21

2. The One True God

There is ONE true God – the “I AM,” who is self-existent in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is the Creator of the universe and the Redeemer of mankind.

Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10,11; Matthew 28:19; Luke 3:22

3. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ

The Scriptures teach about Jesus concerning:

His deity – He is Lord and Saviour, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His teaching and miracles, His anoting death on the cross, His bodily resurrection – He is the firstborn from the dead, His ascension to the right hand of God the Father, and His second coming to earth and rule and reign for a thousand years on earth.

Matthew 1:23, Hebrews 7:26, Acts 2:22, 1 Corinthians 15:3, Matthew 28:6, Acts 1:9, Revelation 20:4

4. The Fall of Man

Mankind, created good, has sinned and deserves the penalty of sin, that is death.

Genesis 1:26,27; 2:17; 3:6; Romans 5:12-19

5. The Salvation of Man

The only way of redemption for mankind from sin is through repentance to God and faith in the cleansing power of the blood of Lord Jesus.

A born-again believer is evidenced with the internal witness of the Holy Spirit and the outward appearance of righteous and holy life.

Luke 24:47; John 3:3; Romans 10:13-15; Ephesians 2:8, Romans 8:16, Titus 2:12

6. The Ordinances of the Church

The ordinance of baptism by immersion is for all who repent and believe in Christ as Savior and Lord. It is a declaration to the world that they have died with Christ and that they also have been raised with Him to be a new creation. Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:16; Acts 10:47,48; Romans 6:4

The Lord’s Supper, consisting of bread and the fruit of the vine, is the symbol expressing a memorial of His suffering and death and a prophecy of His second coming. 1 Corinthians 11:26; 1 Corinthians 11:26

7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

This promise of the Spirit from the Father is distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth. All believers should expect and seek this promise – the baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire, according to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. With it comes the power for life and service, the gifts of the Spirit and their uses in ministry.

Acts 8:12-17; 10:44-46; 11:14-16; 15:7-9, Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4,8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31

8. The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

The initial physical sign is speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives. The speaking in tongues in this instance is the same in essence as the gift of tongues but different in purpose and use.

Acts 2:4, 1 Corinthians 12:4-10,28

9. Sanctification

Sanctification is an act of shunning evil and of fear of God. By the indwelling sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, Christians are able to live a holy life, offering every life aspect to the dominion of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 12:1,2; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 13:12, Romans 6:1-11,13; 8:1,2,13; Galatians 2:20; Philippians 2:12,13; 1 Peter 1:5.

10. The Church and Its Mission

The Church is the body of Christ for the fulfillment of the Great Commission – that is to build a family of God, to worship Him, to show His love for the world and to disciple the world.

1 Corinthians 12:13, Acts 1:8; Psalms 112:9; Galatians 2:10; 6:10; James 1:27, Matthew 28:19,20

11. The Ministry

The church ministry is divinely called by our Lord for the purpose in: building a family of God, worshiping Him, showing His love for and discipling the world.

Ephesian 4:11,16, John 3:23-24, Matthew 28:19-20

12. Divine Healing

Christ’s atoning death on the cross makes deliverance and healing for the human body available in response to faith and prayer of all believers.

Isaiah 53:4,5; Matthew 8:16,17; James 5:14-16

13. The Blessed Hope

All believers share the blessed hope in the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and the transformation of those who are alive at the second coming of the Lord to this earth (1 Thessalonians 4:16,17; Romans 8:23; Titus 2:13; 1 Corinthians 15:51,52).

14. The Millennial Reign of Christ

The second coming of Christ includes first the rapture of the church, which is our blessed hope, and is followed by the return of Christ with His Bride, which is His church, to reign on the earth for one thousand years. During this millennial reign, there will be salvation for the nation of Israel and peace for the whole world.

Zechariah 14:5; Matthew 24:27,30; Revelation 1:7; 19:11-14; 20:1-6, Ezekiel 37:21,22; Zephaniah 3:19,20; Romans 11:26,27, Isaiah 11:6-9; Psalm 72:3-8; Micah 4:3,4

15. The Final Judgment

Matthew 25:46; Mark 9:43-48; Revelation 19:20; 20:11-15; 21:8
